Liz & Geoff's garden
Liz & Geoff's garden was completely overgrown and largely inaccessible when they bought the site in 2008. It is located in the middle of the old Saxon Town and has a milder climate than gardens nearer the river or above Market Street.
When the house building was completed, a lawn was set out with borders and paths. These have roses and dahlias as principal components. Apple, pear, plum and fig trees were also planted. There is an elderly Bramley Cooking apple tree near the middle of the lawn that was saved from the overgrowth and the ivy. This year the vegetable garden has benefitted from additional attention and the warm April sunshine. We have had good crops of early potatoes, peas, broad beans, cauliflower, and lettuce. In late June, we started picking runner beans and there will be sweet corn before the end of July. Home produced compost and recycled grow bags enables the re-use of plots shortly after clearance.
