IT'S ALL HAPPENING
Stimulated, even inspired by the changes this pandemic requires, the Garden Society is adapting itself to appeal to a broader spectrum of the community, offering what excites and engages individuals, families and children and inviting greater participation in new and life enhancing activities.
So, let’s embrace change and look for new and innovative ways to engage and inspire.
A sub-committee will be meeting soon to discuss how we can change so here’s a first opportunity to have your say. Tell us what you want from your society given the current crisis and probable on-going restrictions to public gatherings. info@charlburygardensociety.org.uk
Events are still happening and coming up are a virtual Charlbury Open Gardens with films and photographs of some very splendid local gardens, and a virtual summer Show where you can enter exhibits from the comfort of your own home. Details about both included below.

The big news is that we shall soon have our own, spanking new website where all our events, tips and society information will be found. Many thanks to Helen (website creator), Georgia (designer) and Harriet (on-going maintenance) for making this a reality. More details below.
Finally, and importantly, don’t forget to use your membership card to get discounts on purchases at several garden centres. You’ll immediately get a good return on your subscription investment!
Applegarth – usually 10% on everything;
Burford – 10% on plants (you’ll need the card to apply for their card, usually done while you shop);
Yarnton – 10% on plants and garden purchases (not franchises)
FAREWELL NICOLA AND GEOFF
Last month we said goodbye to two of our longer standing committee members whose lives have moved on to pastures new. Big thanks go to Nicola Morgan (Chairman and Show Secretary) and Geoff Holmberg (Secretary) who have both been pivotal in steering the society for over 20 years. It’s been no easy task and we thank them for their attentive dedication and many hours of involvement.
John Moore, Deputy Chairman, has stepped in to head up the society until the AGM and secretarial tasks are being covered by existing committee members.
VIRTUAL GARDEN SHOW
Charlbury Garden Society’s Virtual Show
Due to the current pandemic, the Charlbury Garden Society has had to cancel some of its events, including the Spring Show. The gardeners of the town weren't able to show off their excellent growing skills, and we were unable to enjoy a room full of their bounty.
The solution has been to go virtual, like so many other organisations. Here’s how it works.
There are 6 categories:
- The tallest sunflower
- The largest vegetable
- The longest vegetable
- The funniest/oddest shaped vegetable
- A perfect flower
- The tallest hollyhock
Take a full resolution photograph and send it as an email attachment to showsecretary@charlburygardensociety.org.uk . The deadline is September 12th, the scheduled date of the Annual Show. This is open to all ages. Don’t forget to add any measuring devices in the photo, or state the measurements taken, plus your own name and location in the email. While you may have to wait for the vegetables, there are flowers now that are begging to have their picture taken.
There will be no prizes, but we’ll post the photos so everyone can enjoy the results.
